EAU BPH Surgery Masterclass: Practical Training and Advances in the Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Masterclass de cirugía de HBP de la EAU

Taking part in a new edition of the Masterclass on Operative Management of Benign Prostatic Obstruction (BPH) organised by the European Association of Urology (EAU) has once again been a highly enriching experience, both professionally and personally.

These programmes represent one of the best examples of how training in urological surgery should evolve: with a strongly practical approach, focused on real-life operating room scenarios and on the direct exchange of experience between specialists.

During the masterclass, we reviewed from a highly practical perspective all current surgical options for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), one of the most common conditions in urology. We are living in particularly exciting times in our field, where technological innovation and the development of minimally invasive techniques are transforming the way we treat our patients.

My participation in this edition included both surgical and educational activities:

  • Live prostate enucleation surgery, sharing technique and real-time decision-making.
  • Semi-live enucleation surgery using thulium fibre laser (TFL) technology from Olympus Corporation, focusing on technical aspects and intraoperative decision-making.
  • A lecture on morcellation strategies and tips, a key step in prostate enucleation that directly impacts the safety and efficiency of the procedure.

Beyond the sessions, one of the most valuable aspects of this type of meeting is the opportunity to continue learning from leading international experts. Urology is a constantly evolving specialty, and sharing experience, discussing complex cases, and comparing approaches is what truly drives progress.

These initiatives reinforce the importance of continuous training in urology, particularly in areas such as BPH surgery, where technique, experience, and innovation make a real difference in clinical outcomes and patients’ quality of life.

I would also like to highlight the excellent organisation of this masterclass, which reflects the high standards and commitment that characterise the EAU and the teams behind these educational programmes.

We continue to move forward in a particularly dynamic period for urology, where the combination of knowledge, technology, and international collaboration allows us to offer increasingly precise, safe, and personalised treatments.
