Dr Javier Romero-Otero appointed President Elect of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM)

I take on my appointment as President Elect of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) with great enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility. The ESSM is one of the leading European scientific societies in the field of sexual medicine and andrology.

For me, this step represents far more than professional recognition. It is an opportunity to contribute actively to the growth of a discipline that has evolved remarkably in recent years and now holds a central position within urology and medicine as a whole.

The ESSM is a leading scientific society in Europe in the field of sexual medicine. It brings together specialists in urology, andrology, gynaecology, psychiatry, endocrinology, and other disciplines involved in sexual health, and works to promote scientific research, participate in the development of clinical consensus, and advance high-level educational standards. Through international congresses, educational programmes, certifications, and scientific publications, the ESSM plays a decisive role in consolidating this field as a discipline grounded in evidence and clinical excellence.

Being elected President Elect means becoming part of the team that will help drive the growth and evolution of sexual medicine in Europe in the coming years. It is an honour to represent a first-class scientific community and contribute to its academic and scientific development.

Throughout my career, I have consistently advocated for subspecialisation, continuing professional development, and clinical research as fundamental pillars for advancing our discipline. Sexual health is an integral part of patients’ quality of life, and addressing it with scientific rigour, sensitivity, and a multidisciplinary approach is a responsibility we must assume as physicians.

I do not see this appointment as an individual achievement, but rather as the result of years of shared work with colleagues, mentors, and outstanding teams both in Spain and across Europe. Medicine is, and will always remain, a collective endeavour.

A new and exciting stage now begins, with the challenge of continuing to advance sexual medicine in Europe through scientific rigour and a strong commitment to service. Our objective remains the same: to expand knowledge, optimise treatments, and provide care that is increasingly precise, human-centred, and evidence-based.
