November is a month dedicated to men. The popular Movember campaign has placed men’s health in the spotlight and it is for this reason that Dr. Javier Romero Otero Otero attended the health program “¿Qué Me Pasa, Doctor?” on La Sexta on International Men’s Day, celebrated on November 19.
The program was dedicated to prostate health, a topic of great relevance in men’s health because the prostate causes two of the most common diseases in men: benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
During the broadcast, Dr. Romero Otero, director of ROC Clinic and of the Department of Urology of HM Hospitales in Madrid, spoke about the new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of these prostate diseases, which today make interventions minimally invasive and recoveries faster.
In reference to prostate cancer, early diagnosis is the key to applying successful therapies, which increase patient survival and avoid unwanted side effects such as urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction and other complications that may arise.
For this purpose, today we have fusion biopsy. This is a very precise and safe diagnostic tool that allows us to see the tumor inside the prostate gland and take samples of the suspicious areas to analyze in detail and to be able to plan a personalized treatment for each patient.
In the event that the best therapeutic option for the patient is the removal of the gland (radical prostatectomy) we can approach it through robotic surgery, with the Hugo or Da Vinci robots, for less surgical aggression, less pain, a shorter postoperative period, less bleeding and less need for transfusion.
Regarding benign prostatic hyperplasia, Dr. Romero Otero spoke about minimally invasive treatments indicated for any prostate size: laser surgery and Aquabeam treatment.
