Are you a man and feel afraid to visit the urologist when experiencing urinary or sexual disorders? In the video blog “Your Medications,” created by EFE Salud and the Viatris Foundation, I discuss, together with one of my patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the importance of attending your regular urology appointments to maintain health and improve your quality of life.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a very common urological condition in men over the age of 50. Its pharmacological treatment can sometimes lead to surgery if complications arise. “Your Medications” analyzes this condition and the importance of therapeutic adherence.
The prostate gland, responsible for producing the fluid that forms part of semen, is located below the bladder and is about the size of a walnut. When the prostate enlarges, it presses on the urethra, making it difficult for urine to pass from the bladder.
The most common symptoms include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, interrupted urination, and urinary incontinence, among others.
As I highlight in this interview, it is crucial for men to take responsibility for their prostate health to ensure early detection of possible benign and malignant conditions. This allows for the implementation of minimally invasive treatments that improve quality of life.
