We talked about prostate pathology, hugo robot and prostate biopsy by image fusion in the program “¿Qué Me Pasa, Doctor? of La Sexta.
The prostate gland causes two of the most frequent diseases in men: prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia. This type of tumor has no symptoms in its initial stages, so it is essential to have annual check-ups with the urologist from the age of 50 onwards, or from the age of 45 if there is a family history of prostate cancer. If a clinically significant prostate tumor is suspected, due to an elevated PSA or an abnormal digital rectal examination, a multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging of the prostate is indicated. With it, and thanks to the fusion ultrasound (Koelis), we can perform targeted biopsies. This is called image fusion prostate biopsy, which takes the MRI image, which for the first time offers images of solid prostate tumors, and fuses it with the ultrasound images taken in real time.
This diagnostic tool, so accurate and safe, allows us, in case of tumor detection, to plan a personalized treatment for each patient. If the best therapeutic option for the patient would be the removal of the gland (radical prostatectomy), we propose to carry it out through a robotic approach. For this purpose, we currently have two surgical robots: Hugo, from Medtronic, and DaVinci, from Intuitive. These are undoubtedly excellent tools for the treatment of uro-oncological pathologies, with numerous advantages for the patient: less surgical aggression, less pain, a shorter postoperative period, less bleeding and less need for transfusion.
